Effects Of Stress

What Are The Effects Of Stress?

Stress is a vastly versatile subject, since different people respond in extremely diverse ways to similar circumstances. For that reason, the effects of stress are also strictly personal and differ from one person to another. It is not possible to generalize such a varied reaction, as stress causes in each one of us.

However, speaking in a broad sense, all kinds of effects of stress can be classified into two groups - the physical effects of stress and the mental effects of stress. Even within these there are many variations and subcategories, but to keep our discussion simple, we will stick to these types of stress effects.

The physical effects of stress are easily identifiable from the appearance of the person. In different people, stress may cause excessive perspiration, shortness of breath, heaving of the chest, extreme agitation, etc. The effects of stress on the heart fill up a category of their own. When stress occurs, the heart is one of the primary organs to be affected because more of the blood supply is directed to the brain in order to help it cope up with the mental aggravation. For that reason, the normal functioning of the heart could get impaired. Some of the common effects of stress on the heart include palpitation, rapid heart rate, gasping for breath, a choking sensation in the chest, etc. In extreme cases, excessive stress may lead on to a seizure, especially in people who are already suffering from hypertension of atherosclerosis, and may even lead to death.

The mental effects of stress are mostly manifested in psychological expressions of extreme emotion. Stressed people could show extreme anger and even violence, extreme feelings of frustration and disappointment or even extreme fear. There is also a chance of the person going into depression. There are actually many ways in which a person might react to stress, and that is the reason why nothing can be generalized here. Some people, when stressed, might just want to go shopping or catch a movie, while some people when stressed will indulge in smoking or consuming alcohol, or even have suicidal tendencies. Such diverse are the mental effects of stress in human beings.

One of the greatest premises of stress today is the workplace. Workplace stress can occur due to a number of factors such as taking more work than can be managed, getting less pay, being fired for poor quality work, etc. There are many effects of job stress that can make an appearance in the person's other aspects of life too. Some of these effects of job stress are a feeling of extreme tiredness, depression and frustration and problems with breathing. A lot of young men and women are taking up to smoking as a result of the workplace stress they are succumbing to. Effects of job stress also make their appearance in the workplace itself, such as the person not being able to manage his or her affairs at work, reaching the workplace late and often in a sullen mood, being resentful of the colleagues, not meeting deadlines. In fact, any lack of productivity in the workplace could be due to stress that the employees are facing there.
