Stress In The Workplace And How Not To Allow It To Rule You
If you are human, you will have faced stress at some point or other in your life. The stress can come on due to several reasons - it could be due to a bill you are finding difficult to pay in time, or a family spat that is not getting issued, or some near one's illness, or that someone is refusing your romantic invitations. Stress happens, but the main thing to know is how to deal with stress. With some psychological and physiological conditioning, everyone can cope with stress, and here are some expert ways on how to deal with stress in our lives.
1. Indulge in some self-exploration exercises.
Meditation always works when you are stressed out. But it is better if you meditate with a purpose. When meditating, try to canalize all the negative thoughts out of your mind and focus on things that give you pleasure. Try isolating yourself if that helps. Another approach is to probe into the root cause of the stress. Delve deeper in your mind and try to find out what is going wrong. Here, you can find peace of mind if you share your worries with someone who really cares for you. However, you must avoid people who have a nasty habit of freaking you out more. If you are of a religious bent of mind, then prayer will of course help. Visit a place of worship and spend some time there.
2. Avoid all kinds of stimulants. Stimulants will incite your nervous system much more when you are trying to cope with stress. Why does stress happen? It is because the brain is not able to get the proper circulation of blood due to which it cannot send respond properly to external stimuli. In other words, the brain gets overworked. Stimulants will only aggravate this condition. The harmful stimulants include caffeine and nicotine. Having a cup of coffee when you are stressed will only make you more panicky. And it is a misconception that smoking helps you cope with stress. In fact, when you smoke, you are exciting the brain more, and hence, it will be more stimulated when the smoking euphoria is done with. 3. Perform breathing exercises There are some good breathing exercises that can help in dealing with stress. The simplest exercise is to sit with an erect posture and then take a deep breath till the time you feel your lungs have become full with the air. Then release the air gradually. After about a minute, continue the procedure. Repeating this inhaling-exhaling exercise about 12 times at a stretch helps the blood to circulate faster within the body and is great as a stress-reliever. In fact, some Asian alternative therapies like the Pranayama and Yoga are world celebrated ways to relieve stress. 4. Perform light relaxing exercises to relieve stress. Exercising is one of the best ways to relieve stress. Light exercises such as aerobics, jogging, cycling and the best of them all - swimming - are great stress busters. These exercises are great for circulation. The principle is thus - relaxing exercises allow the blood to reach the brain and hence the brain will work more efficiently. Playing peppy music when exercising helps the nerve receptors in a much better manner. 5. Do things you like. For most people, spending time doing things they like helps vastly in dealing with stress. For some people reading a book might help, or listening to music, or even going shopping.
